June Home Tip: Weatherstripping your fireplace

June Home Tip: Weatherstripping your fireplace

June 12, 2012

A fireplace can come in handy for those cold winter months. There's nothing quite like a crackling fire. But during the summer, if you have an air conditioned home, you can lose up to 30% of your cooler air. Just through your fireplace.

This loss of cooled air is a waste of energy and can cause your electricity bills to increase substantially.

Here are some simple tips:

1. Close the damper tightly, ensure that the the damper arm is firmly in place.
2. If you have glass doors, ensure they remain shut. Check for gaps and use clear sealing tape to cover any wider than a few mms.
3. Whether you have glass doors or not, you can weatherstrip the chimney with a fireplace plug like this one.
