It seems to be that time of year when Vancouver home owners begin to think about spring upgrades. This could be any number of things. Outside of the home we’ve had a lot of people asking about new gutter installations, or the benefits of double-paned windows for home climate control.
Speaking of climate control, if you’re thinking about updates to your HVAC system remember to consider your old thermostat! That wonderful little dial that shuffles your home temperature up and down could contain between 2.5 and 10 grams of mercury.
Sadly, it takes only 1 gram of mercury to contaminate an eight-hectare lake, so badly that the fish in the lake cannot be eaten for an entire year!*
There is a solution! You can dispose of your old mercury thermostat safely by taking part in the Switch the ‘Stat program! There are public drop off locations all around BC and all you have to do is go to their website.
Thanks for taking the time to think of the greener option!
